Many companies have undergone, are in, or are embarking on a journey through digital transformation, Agile transformation, or both. We’ve worked through the pitfalls common on both fronts and continue to acknowledge, refine, and define towards the finish line. As enterprise-level reporting was centralized in our company, we struggled with the creation of large, cumbersome reports that we felt would answer every question that could be asked. In the end, no solution was good enough. C-suite executives want sensitive information, middle management wants aggregate information, and data analysts and technicians want specific information. The pressure compounded as our BI department was learning how to use new tools and wanted to implement new technology in a company that barely knew it existed. And as old legacy reports continued to break, support items loomed darkly over the entire project backlog. In an industry that is tightening its collective belt, our approach wasn’t to hire more analysts or to increase our budget for consultants—it was simply to start working through our BI/analytics deliverables and processes in an Agile fashion.
