Making SAP BusinessObjects (Artificially) Intelligent at UCLA Health
In the new world of advanced analytics, data is the key to unlocking your organization’s potential—especially data around usage patterns and metrics. But one of the most underutilized data repositories at your disposal is the SAP BusinessObjects platform itself.
In this presentation, Don Collins of UCLA Health discusses how to leverage usage and metadata captured by SAP BusinessObjects with a dose of artificial intelligence (AI) to promote user education and increase user adoption. Working with native tools of the SAP BusinessObjects platform (BI Workspaces, Web Intelligence, and Program Objects) along with 360Suite’s 360Eyes Metadata Repository and some well-placed scripting, the presentation will walk you through a simple example we can all relate to: providing users Amazon-like “product” recommendations.
This presentation will discuss the nuts and bolts of implementing such a solution as well as several alternative approaches. But, more importantly, you will come to understand such an approach lays the groundwork for any AI effort, opening your SAP BusinessObjects platform up to unlimited possibilities in the new world of advanced analytics.
If making the most of your SAP BusinessObjects investment and the data it represents is important to you, and your organization feels implementing current AI and automation practices is crucial to the future of your organization, this session is for you.
Key session takeaways:
- Understand the usage data your SAP BusinessObjects platform contains and how it can be leveraged in an AI scenario.
- Understand the process for implementing BI Workspaces along with Web Intelligence to provide real-time feedback to your SAP BusinessObjects users.
- Understand the power of SAP BusinessObjects Program Objects as a mechanism for injecting AI into your data analytics strategy.

Delivering Actionable Insights Via Delightful Dashboards While Maximizing SAP BI at Medtronic
This is a case study about an initiative to deliver the right actionable information to the appropriate stakeholders in the organization to enable data-driven actions. Our field sales employees and sales leadership already had access to standard timely reporting of key sales metrics. However, we wanted to deliver actionable insights to the appropriate levels of the organization in a format that was easy to consume instead of one-off dashboards for each business.
We approached the project from an end-user perspective and took a persona-based approach to determining a baseline of metrics that are relevant for each persona and the most likely consumption model for each group of users. At the same time, we focused on identifying those metrics that truly drive action and decisions in the field and for our leaders. We also leveraged standard features in SAP BusinessObjects BI as much as possible. For example, we used the updated charting features, designed for mobile, and created custom OpenDocument calls. This project resulted in increased adoption of analytics by creating targeted metrics and dashboards that focus on driving action and generating value for the business. It is possible to deliver actionable insights by focusing on user behavior and understanding their motivations to determine key metrics and how they consume and act on data. This can ultimately drive increased adoption of analytics in decision-making.

BI and Reporting Transformation: Defining the Future of Resource Management and Reporting at the Canada Border Services Agency
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has potentially established a new standard for reporting on financial information within the Canadian federal public service. Participants in the financial/resource management processes were previously limited to using a combination of offline tools and manual processes. Source data for strategic/operational analysis and reporting were contained in multiple systems, and end users were prevented from engaging consistently in “value-added” activities such as data analysis and interpretation. Starting in 2018, the agency’s comptroller embarked on the transformational “One Finance” initiative, with the stated goal of creating a new standard for financial reporting. The reporting and analytics group’s contribution to this initiative was to implement the SAP Business Warehouse (BW) database to the system landscape. SAP BW, chosen for its ability to aggregate data from multiple source (input) systems, has provided a foundation for users to leverage the powerful reporting applications contained in SAP BusinessObjects suite. These reporting applications, operating on SAP BW’s common data repository, now offer users unparalleled insight into how the agency’s financial resources are utilized in service to its mandate. The implementation of consistent reporting across the agency has set the stage for considerable future growth, including a transition to SAP Analytics Cloud and the introduction of predictive analytics.
Key session takeaways:
Key session takeaways:
- It is possible, even feasible, to implement a common financial reporting platform across an entire government department/agency within a relatively short period of time.
- Developing a single, common data repository to aggregate source system data is the first and most important step—this is demonstrated by the outsized returns associated with the CBSA’s investment of time and resources in the foundational SAP BW architecture.
- Establishing proper governance structures that clearly define each stakeholder’s roles and responsibilities (including leveraging project management best practices to subsequently manage those stakeholders) will in turn create a sustainable foundation for this transformation.

Making Data Actionable: From Concept to Visualization
Anyone can make a pretty bar graph, but can you make sound decisions based on what your development staff currently provides? How do you turn a flashy concept into an actionable visualization? Can you see the end result? Will your ideas become reality? Do you have the vision and drive to figure out how to get from today to tomorrow before it becomes yesterday? American mathematician John Tukey once said, "The greatest value of a picture is when it forces us to notice what we never expected to see." What value do you see in your data? And what ideas do you have when you see it?
Learn how you can capitalize on your ideas and turn them into reality by blending the internal with the external, leveraging them into a cohesive strategy for both the short term and the long term. See the five "Stages of the Spectrum" in action (conception, inception, perception, inspection, and direction) while discovering the difference between impact and influence and how that plays into making data actionable.

The Tightrope of Agile BI: The Balance of Innovation and Support
Many companies have undergone, are in, or are embarking on a journey through digital transformation, Agile transformation, or both. We’ve worked through the pitfalls common on both fronts and continue to acknowledge, refine, and define towards the finish line. As enterprise-level reporting was centralized in our company, we struggled with the creation of large, cumbersome reports that we felt would answer every question that could be asked. In the end, no solution was good enough. C-suite executives want sensitive information, middle management wants aggregate information, and data analysts and technicians want specific information. The pressure compounded as our BI department was learning how to use new tools and wanted to implement new technology in a company that barely knew it existed. And as old legacy reports continued to break, support items loomed darkly over the entire project backlog. In an industry that is tightening its collective belt, our approach wasn’t to hire more analysts or to increase our budget for consultants—it was simply to start working through our BI/analytics deliverables and processes in an Agile fashion. Cross-functional skill sets, Agile methodology, inviting the business to the collaboration space, and a new support structure are all topics that will be covered in this session, which is aimed at delivering value for anyone working for different parts of your business.

Human Innovation: Creating a Culture of Creativity and Agility
Considering that “over 95% of consumers and employees are human,” how could our approach to innovation be more human? From his years helping global megabrands act like entrepreneurial startups, brand humanist Dustin Garis proved that the greatest opportunity for brands is not just innovating on products and marketing, but rather innovating on the full human experience. In this talk, Dustin Garis shares mind-bending principles for reinventing the organization from the inside out, creating a culture of creativity and agility and unconventional approaches to human understanding, so companies can achieve a breakthrough market impact.

No Human Is Limited: How San Francisco 49ers Leveraged the Philosophies of GOATs to Propel Its Vision Forward
The San Francisco 49ers business strategy and analytics team firmly believes that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible. As one of only 32 member clubs in the NFL, our impact can be profound, affecting millions. And while we are not the team performing on the field in front of millions of people watching on television, the performance of our fan experience and operations teams is just as important for the tens of thousands of individuals attending that game in person. The mindset of our team is that we must perform with the same passion and drive off the field in order to do everything we can to ensure our fans have a great experience and keep coming back. This is the story of our journey to pushing the boundaries of what is expected from a stadium concessions perspective and developing a solution that just might change a paradigm that has been in place for nearly a century.

Leveraging and Scaling Your BI and Analytics Team to Help Build a Data-Driven Organization
As organizations struggle to build a data-driven culture, there is an often-underutilized secret weapon available. Who in the organization already “gets data”? Who in the organization knows the data quality secrets? Who in the organization knows where the data is hiding out? Who is privy to meetings that occur in silos across the organization and sees who is not talking to whom about the data?
As data and BI/analytics professionals, we are in a unique position to play a key role in steering a data-driven organization. How can you leverage the talents of the data and BI professionals in your organization? We will discuss these questions and share a personal lesson from a recent project where we quickly went from “data zero” to “data hero.” Come to listen, discuss, and walk away with ideas on how to play a strong role in driving a data-driven culture.

We ask that our SAP BusinessObjects authors create reports based on our BEx queries, however they are unaware of the many BEx queries that are available and lack the background information on how the values shown in the SAP Business Warehouse (BW) report are derived. To address this issue, we have developed queries built off of the stored SAP metadata that the users can execute in order to provide a list of all of the available queries, as well as to drill down to obtain more granular information on the dataflow of the available fields. We have also created a “Report Catalogue” template that, when completed, it will provide the user with a better understanding of what the report is to be used for, which filters were used, and which calculations were applied for the final set of results. The usage of both tools help to reduce the confusion as to what SAP BW reports are out there and allows the SAP BusinessObjects authors and the SAP BW super users the ability to perform “backwards engineering” on the report in order to obtain a more granular understanding of the report without needing access to SAP HANA Studio/BW workbench or SAP Information Steward data lineage.
Key session takeaways:
Key session takeaways:
- Good business decisions and analytics require a thorough understanding of the data source.
- More awareness of the available reports will help to reduce duplicate reports.
- Consumers of reports will be able to search through the catalogue in order to find reports that are best able to suit their requirements.
