Pushing Web Intelligence to the Limit: Real World Implementation

How do we get meaningful information to people at the correct time for them to process and use that information?  At the University of Utah we have used WEBI to convey data from simple accounting reports to complex statistical reporting with predictive analytics.  Using WEBI’s capabilities as an enterprise-wide reporting tool, we have done everything from embedding reports in our electronic medical record to bursting reports to user’s emails, from building patient-facing progress reports to creating self-service analytics.

David Yurman Develops a BICC to Match High End Brand with High End Efficiency & Results for Analytics

David Yurman went through an entire ERP replacement in 8 months during 2016. The next challenge was to produce meaningful analytics from entirely new data sources. Managing the data governance to ensure accuracy in mapping the new data and provide all the key metrics Business Analysts expected as well as the new metrics required was a big challenge. Then producing compelling actionable analytics from that data and doing it in a time frame that would not impact operations made the challenge greater still.

Learn how they set up a BI Competency Center to bring together the people, processes and technology required to deliver on this challenge. Hear about the transformation this brought about in communication and development times along with the accuracy of the resulting analytics and their "fit to need".  See where expected values were achieved and what unexpected values resulted also, along with what gems they uncovered in the process.

Operationalizing Analytics in the Royal Canadian Navy: An Unexpected Journey

For over a decade the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) has invested in digitizing and integrating business processes in ERP Systems. In 2013, Vice Admiral Ron Lloyd, then the Deputy Commander of the RCN and since June 2016 the Commander, set the course to operationalize an analytics capability that would benefit every decision maker in the enterprise. Profits would be measured by increased readiness. As a constraint, the RCN would leverage the enterprise tools available and would not make any investments in hardware or software. Instead all expenditures would be focused on change management, content production and user adoption. It was known that technology would not be the problem. What was unexpected was the amount of time and executive engagement that would be needed to drive change. This is the story of the RCN’s experience from both the point of view of the executive champion and the program manager.

An Operating Model for an Analytics Center of Expertise

The Royal Canadian Navy’s analytics journey began in 2013 with system Go-Live occurring in 2015. To support the initiative and drive adoption, Analytics Support Centres were established in four geographic regions to support up to twenty Lines of Business. They are closely synonymous to a Business Intelligence Competency Centre. At the outset, what was missing was a common operating model and set of repeatable processes to build awareness, isolate value cases, prioritize work, apply resources, realize value and drive adoption. This session will cover the evolution of the RCN’s Analytics Support Centre Operating Model and will highlight some of the successes and failures experienced throughout the journey.

Impossible Odds: A Story of Strength & Survival

On October 25, 2011, Jessica Buchanan and a colleague were kidnapped at gunpoint by Somali land pirates and held for 93 days, enduring the most harrowing and painful experience of her life. On the day of her kidnapping, she told herself, “some do come out alive, the numbers are small but they do exist.” During her captivity, she was terrorized by her captors, held outdoors in a scrub desert and kept on a starvation diet. Finally, after fruitless negotiations with her captors and her medical state becoming a life-or-death issue, President Barack Obama ordered Navy SEAL Team Six to attempt a rescue. On January 25, 2012, members of SEAL Team Six attacked the heavily-armed captors killing all and airlifting Buchanan and her colleague to safety. In this keynote, Jessica will share the tools she quickly learned to stay alive: how to remain hopeful, trust your instincts and dig deep even when you feel completely empty of any resources. Jessica is living proof that the human spirit is indomitable!

Mining for Universe Diamonds: A BusinessObjects Universe Information Tool Provides a Treasure Trove of Information

The democratization of reporting in organizations allows for flexibility and speed to market, but it can also create a tremendous repository of reports without data governance or technology insight.  Manheim encountered the complexity of this situation when they needed to convert users to a new enterprise data warehouse.

What a pickle!  How could data governance and technology comb through 75 BOBJ universes, each with umpteen fields, and a related 10,000 reports, to accomplish this conversion in a reasonable timeframe and without negatively impacting end users?

The solution was the creation of a Universe Information Tool.  It provides information on what universes, reports, and fields are in the BOBJ system and who is using them.  The tool, which includes a data-extract program, a universe, and reports, allows Manheim to analyze the potential effects of database and universe changes on reports.

Hands-On: You want to get data from where? - Dynamic joins in Information Design Tool 4.2

Many times, in adhoc reporting scenarios, you run into a situation where users would like report on different dates such as transaction date, GL date, posting date and others scenarios.  However, you can only do one type of join in the Universe to support this kind of reporting due to a situation of effective dated joins from FACT to the Dimension tables based on the dates selected. In such situations, where there is a need to do a conditional join among the FACT and Dimension tables, based on the date that they want to report on, we can implement Dynamic joins. Join this session to understand in detail the problem at hand and the creative solution to this problem using very strong features of Information Design Tool 4.2 and higher versions

Increasing Adoption & Engagement with Lumira and Design Studio SDK

Since the introduction of Design Studio and Lumira, International Paper has looked for ways of migrating legacy Xcelsius and BEx Web Application Designer content over to these next generation offerings by SAP.

  • Migration, or adaptation, is never a straightforward task, nor do requirements stay the same over time. While Lumira and Design Studio have been clearly stated as the way forward by SAP, we have faced unique requirements that required use of SDK extensions built in-house.

  • Customer adoption is also a key to success. While we can use standard out-of-box tools, many times our users have different ideas of what they want.  SDK Extensions have helped bridge the gap while not going “off road” with a completely custom application.

This session aims to provide:

  • Actual examples of what is possible to create for both self-serve users in Lumira Desktop and for developers in Design Studio.

  • A very high level explanation of skills needed and considerations to think about regarding SDK extensions.

The Five People You Meet in Dashboard Heaven

Following the phenomenal success of “The Seven Deadly Sins of Dashboard Design”, BI Dashboard Evangelist, Paul Grill, shifts the focus to highlighting some remarkable BI dashboards – how they came about, the impact they had and the people that made them happen. The engagement of the business user is critical to both the success and user adoption of any BI solution. In the case studies covered, the users play critical roles in the idea, the design and the result and will show the importance of best practices in making the user experience the number one priority. The examples will range from an analysis of hospital patient flow to saving the world’s remaining tiger population and all used SAP BusinessObjects tools to either prototype, develop or both.

Increase the Effectiveness of your User Community with Self-Service

One of the most pressing needs in business is getting the right information to the right people at the right time.  How does a small staff go about meeting the needs of the many decision makers and analysts in the organization?  The answer for C Spire is Self-Service.  Putting metrics, aggregates, and detail data a mouse click away where the user can view the data in a way that fits their research or decision process reduces the amount of time necessary to reach a decision point. As a result, the decision-maker’s decision is reinforced with the data that supports it which leads to better decisions.

What’s Happening at the City of Mesa? Creating Interactive Dashboards in Web Intelligence

Using Web Intelligence functionality (input controls, variables, charts/tables), the City of Mesa, Arizona has created dynamic and interactive reports/dashboards. Learn how the City has used these techniques to create a more cohesive and guided analytical solution and reduced the number of reports needed to better understand what is happening at the City.

We started with 19 different reports that showed the exact same information but had different grouping depending on how a department wanted to analyze their data. By using the variables and input controls, we consolidated those 19 separate reports into one report. In addition, we’ve added some switchers to go between tables/charts to help users better visualize what is happening with their data and links to other reports.

How USPI Delivers Self Service Reporting

This session will highlight and demonstrate how United Surgical Partners International (USPI) built out business intelligence capabilities along with a Data Warehouse from scratch, and delivered reporting, dashboards, and self-service analytics corporate-wide in under six months at a quarter of the expected cost. After 2 years of massive data warehouse growth, USPI was looking to move away from a “Push” reporting model to building out a custom Enterprise Business Intelligence Portal where all end users can go to in order to see the reports and dashboards they need to make their necessary decisions and run their business.  Utilizing Business Objects "Infoview" was the “out of the box” solution, but would require each user to consume a BO License to access their reports and dashboards. What if you could build a home grown enterprise reporting portal that utilized the power of webi reports and xcelsius dashboards, and single sign on leveraging Active Directory, in order to build a robust EBI Portal that houses reports and interactive dashboards?  Come find out how USPI made this vision a reality.
