Your Analytics Future: Looking Beyond Tomorrow

Analytics is no longer an afterthought to operational systems—it’s now the foundation for the innovative organizations of the future. But these new opportunities bring big disruptions to traditional BI technology and teams. Join this session to hear how organizations can give people the fast and flexible insights they need to create the companies of tomorrow, while leveraging the best of existing investments, and get a glimpse of the artificial intelligence future.

Disruption Ahead: The Big Trends in BI & Analytics

This session looks at concrete success stories of how companies like yours are helping users turn business intelligence into real business innovation, including new customer experiences, new business models, and new ways of creating business value. But new opportunities bring new challenges, and today’s business users have different expectations than the past. Join this session to hear the concrete steps you can take to bring traditional business intelligence into the modern age, including “modern” self-service BI and data preparation, predictive analytics, and the rise of the Hadoop/Spark ecosystem.

The Road to Optimization

Turning data into a business advantage through optimization is the goal of most organizations. The ever-growing availability of data, along with expanding computing power and tools, opens the door to businesses gaining competitive advantage through analytical processes and skill.

For UPS, process reengineering, data management, and advanced analytics are core to performance improvement. Jack Levis, Senior Director of Industrial Engineering at UPS, will share his experiences and best practices to compete with analytics, requiring organizational support in the form of data, tools, and senior management commitment. Analytics takes the general forms of:

  • Descriptive analytics: Analysis of historical data

  • Predictive analytic: Prediction of probabilities of future trends

  • Prescriptive analytics: Evaluate new ways to operate

UPS has gone through a long evolution in moving up this analytical hierarchy which required organizational commitment and significant process change. While many lessons were learned along the way, the end result has been reduced cost, improved service to customers, and a data driven architecture for the future.

UPS has seen a reduction of 185 million miles driven per year by integrating Analytics within its operations’ systems. Its award-winning dispatch optimization tool ORION (On Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation) completed deployment in 2016 and is saving $300M to $400M annually.

This presentation will show how UPS built upon a culture of engineering and quantitative analysis. Those core competencies are the foundation of systems reengineering efforts that use advanced analytics and location information. Examples of the changed processes will be presented as well as lessons learned from the journey.

Cater to the Audience of One

The greatest challenge in building a cohesive, enterprise-wide analytics roadmap is perspective. Many organizations have built roadmaps from the perspective of the executive, or the operational needs of the workforce. Hear a real-life case study about an organization that turned every employee into an analyst, equipped the team with intuitive solutions for gaining their own insights and produced an analytics platform that serves every area of the value chain (Supply Chain, Logistics, Marketing, Sales and Backoffice) - all in the cloud. Solutions covered include SAP Digital Boardroom, SAP Cloud for BusinessObjects, SAP BW/4 HANA and S/4 HANA - to name a few.

Big Data & Storytelling

Big data is changing everything from content development to culture itself. Matthew Luhn, a 20 year Pixar story veteran will share how big data is being used to create great stories and characters in films like Toy Story 3, Inside Out and beyond. Matthew’s experience and insight will empower and inspire publishers, advertisers and innovators on how to forge stronger, more meaningful connections with consumers.

How Implementing a BICC & SAP HANA Reporting Platform Transformed BI at Mobile Mini

Mobile Mini embarked on a BI journey through the course of 2017 implementing a Business Intelligence Competency Center in support of a new real-time SAP HANA reporting platform that propelled the organization forward in their BI journey building the foundation for future success.

SAP Lumira Version 2.1: Overview, Strategy & Roadmap

SAP Lumira version 2.0, SAP’s new flagship on-premise software was launched in August 2017 and covers analytics scenarios from ad-hoc self-service discovery to sophisticated analytical app design, including business planning. The software combines former separate products, SAP Analytics Design Studio version 1.x and SAP Lumira version 1.x.  Get an overview of SAP’s upcoming brand new Lumira 2.1 version showcasing new key capabilities for both business users and professional app designers.

How to Improve ROI & User Adoption for Your BI Implementation

This session will focus on the lessons learned from implementing BI with poor user adoption and the strategies to counter and improve user engagement. This is not a typical story, but will give honest truths and actual real-world experience that are sure to resonate with audience members who have struggled with similar challenges in their BI landscape. The end result was a more engaged user base who feel that they are a part of the process and their contribution is valuable. The business users became more involved and committed to the success of BI and reporting in the organization. The company was able to save money and get access to information faster than before, resulting in improved marketing and sales campaigns.

Learn How SAP OpenUI5 Mobile Apps Can Complement Your BI Roadmap

Our mobile phones have become ubiquitous, we use them to do almost everything, however our mobile experience in the workplace is lagging behind. How can we have apps that rival our real world everyday experience? I believe SAP OpenUI5 and UI5 in general can fit into a company’s BI roadmap to deliver fast, robust mobile applications that offer great user experience and data visualization. I have researched and spoken with different individuals across multiple industries, namely Airline, Oil and Gas, Banking and Finance, Telecommunications and Retail to get an idea of some of the use cases where their existing BI tools may fall short and OpenUI5 could mend the gap in their existing BI architecture. These business use cases are discussed in my recently published book SAP OpenUI5 for Mobile BI and Analytics. Mobile apps were built using two of the five industries; airline and telecommunications. These use cases were the foundations for designing apps using two different styles and layout, the airline app used custom controls and the telecommunications app built using standard tiles.

Leaner Staff, Deeper Analytics: Driving Greater Accountability with Fewer Resources Using BusinessObjects

During the boom years where companies focused almost solely on growth, one of the often-neglected areas of the Oil and Gas business was granular cost and performance management at the individual well level. Quite simply, who was worried about small costs on a low performing well when everyone was busy drilling as fast as possible?  With the downturn, the focus quickly shifted to one of hyper scrutiny of each cost, and driving more performance out of even the lowest performance well.  Unfortunately, legacy accounting systems weren’t built to provide data in a way that is easily manageable by the field.  In fact, they didn’t even know how to provide the data broken out into field operations relevant hierarchies.  Enter BusinessObjects…by fully utilizing modern analytics technology we delivered fully field relevant P&L and LOE data, broken down in such a way that the field could take ownership of the data easily, while simultaneously allowing them to take a deep dive as needed into individual costs (at the invoice level) for each well.  The result has been an expansion of accountability, a field organization that can have each lease operator fully owning the performance, cost, and results of each and every well.

Andeavor Case Study Series (3 of 3): Analytics Implementation: Increasing User Adoption Through Self-Service Reporting & Analytics

Gartner defines Self-Service analytics as, “a form of business intelligence (BI) in which line-of-business professionals are enabled and encouraged to perform queries and generate reports on their own, with nominal IT support.” Utilizing the robust data layer of SAP BW/4HANA and the semantic/presentation layers of SAP BusinessObjects and Microsoft PowerBI, business users can realize many benefits of deploying effective self-service solutions. This session will outline the methodology we used to develop flexible data and semantic layers and ultimately provide an environment to business users allowing them to generate their own queries and create the necessary data visualizations to support analytical capabilities. We will highlight the use of Web Intelligence (Webi), Analysis for Office, Lumira and non-SAP tools such as PowerBI. In addition to the tool design considerations this session will outline process design considerations for effective self-service reporting and driving efficient user adoption.

Andeavor Case Study Series (1 of 3): BW4HANA Implementation

Data and Analytics will change the way business is done.  Andeavor took on a multiyear project to transform the way users experience reporting.  This lead to the implementations of the BW4HANA product, along with BOBJ 4.2 as the enterprise solution for analytics.

Andeavor Case Study Series (2/3): Our Adventures in Field-based BW/4HANA Modeling: A World Without InfoObject

Our ongoing deployment of BW/4HANA enables significant amount of Business Warehouse (BW) development without the burden and overhead of traditional BW infoObjects. In fact, many scenarios are modeled without an infoObject at all. This session will discuss how master data attributes & text references are modeled in Open ODS objects, relationships to report providers, & when infoObjects are still required. Special focus will be given to models based on real time references to SDI/SLT sources. The outcome of this approach is design agility and flexibility and something that every BW customer should understand if they are considering a migration or net new implementation of BW/4HANA.

Emotional Intelligence & Design in Data Visualization: How We Tell Our Meaningful Story

One of the greatest challenges in the Business Intelligence world is sharing that intelligence with leaders, individual contributors, managers, and additional stakeholders across a wide range of expertise and personal investment. The challenge we face each day is how to effectively use analysis and visualization to create a message that sticks with and motivates our audience. In my work with ServiceSource, I have challenged the standard of data visualization from a hybrid perspective of design and emotional intelligence, resulting in presentation of data that speaks to each audience member and stakeholder, giving them what they need to move the business forward with constructive action and into positive growth patterns.

SAP Analytics Cloud Hybrid Use Cases

Modern Analytics deployments are blurring the lines between on-premise and Cloud deployments. We believe that any analytics deployments should provide a seamless experience where business users do not have to think about where data or content resides. Resources like tools, data connectivity, budget, organization, program management, training, licensing, and internal evangelization are shared between on-premise and cloud systems. The journey to the cloud many times starts with on-premise deployments that extend and expand into complementary cloud subscriptions and should not require an understanding whether resources are on-premise or cloud. This session will help you understand how SAP Analytics can be used in Hybrid deployment scenarios.

SAP Analytics Cloud & Digital Boardroom Roadmap

This session will focus on the roadmap for SAP Analytics Cloud, SAP’s new generation of SaaS cloud analytics. SAP Analytics Cloud is a single experience for decision making that allows users to discover, visualize, plan and predict, all in one solution. Using a browser or your Apple mobile device, you can wrangle and interact with virtually any data to forecast outcomes, automate insights, simulate scenarios and ultimately make better fact-based decisions before taking action.

How Harley-Davidson Regained Control of SAP BusinessObjects.

The Harley-Davidson BI Team has the gigantic challenge of managing both the internal & external customer BI creation & delivery to a turn-of-the-century old business. Over time, the HD BI Team had lost, or was never able to have, little bits of control necessary to steer this motorcycle. They were challenged with: managing BOBJ monitoring standards; BOBJ landscape management; regression testing strategy & execution; user management; BOBJ integration with corporate scheduling; future reporting environment admin/management platform. Enter the 360Suite of SAP BusinessObjects tools. Join Jude & Nathan as they discuss how HD’s BI Team uses these solutions to give them the confidence & scale for a small team to regain control through: installation; deployment; training; 360Suite support; testing strategy & execution; scheduling strategy & execution; and lesson learned.

Business Intelligence to the Future

Noble's business departments were searching for methods to create their own self-service analytics with easy to use visuals tools for reporting while leveraging governed data. The market has a tremendous amount of offerings which allow the visualization layer with simple uploads of content from excel, csv, etc. However, the governed data was the challenge to overcome. The off-the-shelf products allow the analysts to define their own metrics; while providing the flexibility to leverage other external data sources to manipulate/optimize the source content.  By leveraging the governed data sources converted to HANA Optimized data models, and in some cases virtualizing the data from external sources to eliminate data redundancy, we are gaining performance efficiency while providing self-service analytics using Lumira. Design Studio remains the toolset for the final published reports, assuring the organization the governed data remained constant.

Lessons Learned from Multiple SAP BI Implementations

The presentation will outline some of the lessons learned across multiple implementation phases of the Army’s national level SAP implementation, the Logistics Modernization Program (LMP). There are four SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementations in the Army and LMP is the national wholesale level ERP. Some of those lessons learned include the need for a BI Strategy leveraging commercial best practices, the creation a Business Intelligence Business Team Lead (BI BTL) to manage BI requirements within the ERP, and lessons on how to manage a highly complex implementation that is almost continuously adding new tools and capabilities. The presentation will also discuss areas where improvement is ongoing. For the first time LMP, which started in 1999, completed a final deployment in 2016 and transitioned the entire program into sustainment. Prior to 2016, the entire program had continuously been planning for the next major implementation. By being in sustainment it is allowing the time to re-evaluate the overall solution and concentrate on opportunities to include additional tools while trying to optimize the solution.

Creating the Business Case for a Move to BW/4HANA: It’s Simple, Right?

How does a company running BW justify the move to BW/4HANA? Johnsonville migrated to BW Powered by HANA in 2014, as a technical migration using DMO, with little simplification. While the benefits of HANA were seen in query performance and data load times, responsive delivery on model changes remained a headache. Our data flows remained with multiple persistence layers, legacy (well legacy for BW/4) objects, and ripe with ABAP routines embedded in Transformations which increased the complexity to support and modify. Looking to stay on the innovation code line, Johnsonville has embarked on a BW/4 readiness project, with expected benefits that will allow nimble & responsive model change and development, utilizing native HANA and reducing ABAP. Come see the recipe we are using to cook up a success story!

Designing a Design Studio Dashboard: From a Vision to Reality

At Newell Brands, we are using SAP Design Studio and SAP Business Warehouse to provide timely customer service metrics for our operational leaders to gain insights into the business.  Our current process all started with a simple Tableau mock-up and has transitioned into the dashboard you see today by leveraging HANA views to increase performance.  Rather than waiting for monthly reporting updates, this information is available daily to all managers and directors via the SAP portal. We’ve since developed a dashboard implementation methodology to enable a repeatable and proven process from inception to reality.  It begins by defining a process for transitioning a simple abstract idea into the real requirements needed as input for a complete design. This session will guide you through that process by taking examples from our journey so you can mimic our successes and avoid our mistakes on your path towards a corporate wide streamlined dashboard.

Boston Properties’ Sarbanes-Oxley Journey & The BI Team’s Role in SOX Compliance

Like all publicly traded companies, Boston Properties faced increasing audit requirements on its financial reports and internal controls to ensure Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance, and to adhere to the standards established by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). Calming the Data Chaos at Organic Valley

The problems that Organic Valley was faced with included: many disparate systems needed to do analytics for our milk supply management; being very labor intensive to correlate all the data into somewhat useable format to be used by the business for decision making; lacking any type of scenario planning capability; and a distrust of validity of data. We resolved these issues by: creating multiple Universes in Business Objects with several sets of data needed for analytics; developing new reports within Business Objects that joined two, and sometimes three different Universes of data to automate a large chunk of our analytic needs. We now have the ability to run multi-factor scenario models to help senior management make decisions related to milk supply management and an increased trust of data provided in analytics. This presentation will include: explanations of the various types of information and systems being used prior to developing BI capabilities within Business Objects; types of business questions asked by senior management; a comparison of response cycle time prior to Business Objects and after; an explanation of automated validations; and continued expansion of data governance/data steward work.
