The Future of Analytics

With today’s tools and technologies, analytics that could only be dreamed of just a few years ago are now both possible and affordable. As a result, the ability to both create and consume analytics continues to be pushed to broader audiences. This talk will cover themes related to how self-service approaches are evolving, how new analytical roles are being created, and how organizations need to adapt to account for these trends. Drawn from observation of many large organizations, the talk will provide food for thought to attendees to reconsider their approach to analytics.

Human Innovation: Creating a Culture of Creativity and Agility

Considering that “over 95% of consumers and employees are human,” how could our approach to innovation be more human? From his years helping global megabrands act like entrepreneurial startups, brand humanist Dustin Garis proved that the greatest opportunity for brands is not just innovating on products and marketing, but rather innovating on the full human experience. In this talk, Dustin Garis shares mind-bending principles for reinventing the organization from the inside out, creating a culture of creativity and agility and unconventional approaches to human understanding, so companies can achieve a breakthrough market impact.

No Human Is Limited: How San Francisco 49ers Leveraged the Philosophies of GOATs to Propel Its Vision Forward

The San Francisco 49ers business strategy and analytics team firmly believes that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible. As one of only 32 member clubs in the NFL, our impact can be profound, affecting millions. And while we are not the team performing on the field in front of millions of people watching on television, the performance of our fan experience and operations teams is just as important for the tens of thousands of individuals attending that game in person. The mindset of our team is that we must perform with the same passion and drive off the field in order to do everything we can to ensure our fans have a great experience and keep coming back. This is the story of our journey to pushing the boundaries of what is expected from a stadium concessions perspective and developing a solution that just might change a paradigm that has been in place for nearly a century.

Opening Remarks

Join us as we kick off the annual BI+Analytics Conference and explore some of the trends and topics of interest for this network.

Leveraging and Scaling Your BI and Analytics Team to Help Build a Data-Driven Organization

As organizations struggle to build a data-driven culture, there is an often-underutilized secret weapon available. Who in the organization already “gets data”? Who in the organization knows the data quality secrets? Who in the organization knows where the data is hiding out? Who is privy to meetings that occur in silos across the organization and sees who is not talking to whom about the data?

As data and BI/analytics professionals, we are in a unique position to play a key role in steering a data-driven organization. How can you leverage the talents of the data and BI professionals in your organization? We will discuss these questions and share a personal lesson from a recent project where we quickly went from “data zero” to “data hero.” Come to listen, discuss, and walk away with ideas on how to play a strong role in driving a data-driven culture.

BI and Reporting Transformation: Defining the Future of Resource Management and Reporting at the Canada Border Services Agency

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has potentially established a new standard for reporting on financial information within the Canadian federal public service. Participants in the financial/resource management processes were previously limited to using a combination of offline tools and manual processes. Source data for strategic/operational analysis and reporting were contained in multiple systems, and end users were prevented from engaging consistently in “value-added” activities such as data analysis and interpretation. Starting in 2018, the agency’s comptroller embarked on the transformational “One Finance” initiative, with the stated goal of creating a new standard for financial reporting. The reporting and analytics group’s contribution to this initiative was to implement the SAP Business Warehouse (BW) database to the system landscape. SAP BW, chosen for its ability to aggregate data from multiple source (input) systems, has provided a foundation for users to leverage the powerful reporting applications contained in SAP BusinessObjects suite. These reporting applications, operating on SAP BW’s common data repository, now offer users unparalleled insight into how the agency’s financial resources are utilized in service to its mandate. The implementation of consistent reporting across the agency has set the stage for considerable future growth, including a transition to SAP Analytics Cloud and the introduction of predictive analytics.

Key session takeaways:

  • It is possible, even feasible, to implement a common financial reporting platform across an entire government department/agency within a relatively short period of time.

  • Developing a single, common data repository to aggregate source system data is the first and most important step—this is demonstrated by the outsized returns associated with the CBSA’s investment of time and resources in the foundational SAP BW architecture.

  • Establishing proper governance structures that clearly define each stakeholder’s roles and responsibilities (including leveraging project management best practices to subsequently manage those stakeholders) will in turn create a sustainable foundation for this transformation.

Adopting Agile Transformation

Ever wonder about what Agile methodology is all about? This panel will be available to talk about their experiences bringing Agile to their organizations, how it streamlined their work environment, and the results achieved. Bring your questions and hear from peer organizations on how they’ve developed and integrated Agile methodology and how your organization or team can benefit from using it.

Becoming Agile at Mobile Mini: A Business Intelligence Team’s Transformation Story

Learn about Mobile Mini’s (MMI) business intelligence team’s story of going from a traditional approach processing requests to an Agile methodology. MMI will share its process, lessons learned, and the next steps.

The Beginning:

  • Volatile process with many requests

  • Siloed work environment: A lot of work on low-value, highly complex tasks

  • Lack of communication between team members and customers

  • Lack of ownership within the team and customers

The Transformation:

  • Started Scrum ceremonies (bi-weekly sprint, planning meeting, customer meeting)

  • Mixed in Kanban for support and bug fixes

  • Identified key stakeholders and included them in the process

The Happy Ever After (with the implementation of Agile):

  • The team is more collaborative and better connected.

  • The process was stabilized and predictable.

  • The team and customers now own their parts of the process.

  • The team has a higher throughput of tasks.

Key session takeaways:

  • Agile is a process not a switch

  • Benefits of adapting Agile

  • Lessons learned going through the process

Delivering Actionable Insights Via Delightful Dashboards While Maximizing SAP BI at Medtronic

This is a case study about an initiative to deliver the right actionable information to the appropriate stakeholders in the organization to enable data-driven actions. Our field sales employees and sales leadership already had access to standard timely reporting of key sales metrics. However, we wanted to deliver actionable insights to the appropriate levels of the organization in a format that was easy to consume instead of one-off dashboards for each business.

We approached the project from an end-user perspective and took a persona-based approach to determining a baseline of metrics that are relevant for each persona and the most likely consumption model for each group of users. At the same time, we focused on identifying those metrics that truly drive action and decisions in the field and for our leaders. We also leveraged standard features in SAP BusinessObjects BI as much as possible. For example, we used the updated charting features, designed for mobile, and created custom OpenDocument calls. This project resulted in increased adoption of analytics by creating targeted metrics and dashboards that focus on driving action and generating value for the business. It is possible to deliver actionable insights by focusing on user behavior and understanding their motivations to determine key metrics and how they consume and act on data. This can ultimately drive increased adoption of analytics in decision-making.

Key session takeaways:

  • Define your actionable insights.

  • Design for use.

  • Leverage all technology features.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has potentially established a new standard for reporting on financial information within the Canadian federal public service. Participants in the financial/resource management processes were previously limited to using a combination of offline tools and manual processes. Serving the Self-Service Community at Canadian Department of National Defense

We ask that our SAP BusinessObjects authors create reports based on our BEx queries, however they are unaware of the many BEx queries that are available and lack the background information on how the values shown in the SAP Business Warehouse (BW) report are derived. To address this issue, we have developed queries built off of the stored SAP metadata that the users can execute in order to provide a list of all of the available queries, as well as to drill down to obtain more granular information on the dataflow of the available fields. We have also created a “Report Catalogue” template that, when completed, it will provide the user with a better understanding of what the report is to be used for, which filters were used, and which calculations were applied for the final set of results. The usage of both tools help to reduce the confusion as to what SAP BW reports are out there and allows the SAP BusinessObjects authors and the SAP BW super users the ability to perform “backwards engineering” on the report in order to obtain a more granular understanding of the report without needing access to SAP HANA Studio/BW workbench or SAP Information Steward data lineage.

Key session takeaways:

  • Good business decisions and analytics require a thorough understanding of the data source.

  • More awareness of the available reports will help to reduce duplicate reports.

  • Consumers of reports will be able to search through the catalogue in order to find reports that are best able to suit their requirements.

SAP Analytics Cloud: Neugebauer Chocolate Blended X-Data with O-Data to Better Understand the Customer Experience

Collecting customer experience data is challenging and very valuable for companies to better understand customers' perception of their brand and products/services. Traditional analysis through operational reporting makes it difficult to view trends, apply predictive analytics, and manage customer experience data. Using SAP Analytics Cloud, SAP Cloud Platform, and main statistical language (R language), understand how a chocolate company in Brazil combined operational data (O-data) with experience data (X-data), generating smart insights through the augmented analytics approach. Customer profile data, combined with satisfaction survey, can drive a production line to optimize results. This information allows for measuring customer satisfaction and loyalty through the net promoter score (NPS) KPI. Through the R language, you can view the most relevant opinions of the services consumed by customers. All information shared by users about the company or products is collected and interpreted through a Twitter API integration, allowing for a multifaceted analysis (operational, experience, social networks). This analytics solution—combining augmented analytics concepts and the combination of X-data with O-data—enabled the company to view its business from a new perspective, improving their internal processes and increasing the level of customer satisfaction.

Key session takeaways:

  • Generate business insights with an augmented analytics approach.

  • Leverage data to enhance customer experience.

  • Learn how to use SAP Analytics Cloud to combine X-data with O-data.

Benjamin Moore & Co.’s Journey from Traditional Reporting to a Blend of Visual Analytics and Machine Learning Models Using SAP Analytics Cloud

With the flood of data available, businesses these days are more interested in knowing “what has happened” and “what could happen.” Companies with huge amounts of data in hand can do analytics, but it has been a major hindrance in answering questions such as how and where to start? What type of analytics is appropriate?

We at Benjamin Moore & Co. had similar problems that other companies face. For solving this puzzle, Benjamin Moore used tools such as SAP BusinessObjects 4.2, SAP BW 7.4, and SAP HANA to extract meanings from the huge amount of data in real time, helping to improve decision-making. The analytics in the company did not stop just with that—steps were taken to drive the analytics for predicting the future for instantaneous decision-making. As a first step, a regression model was built with the help of SAP BusinessObjects and Excel 2007. But this model did not provide the results as expected. After a lot of research, the company then used SAP Analytics Cloud for developing a blend of interactive visual dashboards and machine learning models (clustering and regression models). Decision-making that used to take weeks now takes just a few hours.

Key session takeaways:

  • How to transfer from traditional reporting to predictive analytics gradually

  • How machine learning models help in decision-making

  • How visual dashboard and machine learning models improved data literacy in the company

The Tightrope of Agile BI: The Balance of Innovation and Support

Many companies have undergone, are in, or are embarking on a journey through digital transformation, Agile transformation, or both. We’ve worked through the pitfalls common on both fronts and continue to acknowledge, refine, and define towards the finish line. As enterprise-level reporting was centralized in our company, we struggled with the creation of large, cumbersome reports that we felt would answer every question that could be asked. In the end, no solution was good enough. C-suite executives want sensitive information, middle management wants aggregate information, and data analysts and technicians want specific information. The pressure compounded as our BI department was learning how to use new tools and wanted to implement new technology in a company that barely knew it existed. And as old legacy reports continued to break, support items loomed darkly over the entire project backlog. In an industry that is tightening its collective belt, our approach wasn’t to hire more analysts or to increase our budget for consultants—it was simply to start working through our BI/analytics deliverables and processes in an Agile fashion. Cross-functional skill sets, Agile methodology, inviting the business to the collaboration space, and a new support structure are all topics that will be covered in this session, which is aimed at delivering value for anyone working for different parts of your business.

Key session takeaways:

  • The importance of iterative BI development—end-user collaboration is key
