Transforming NHL Fan Engagement with SAP HANA Has Turned Occasional Customers Into Die-Hard Fans

The NHL has been turning occasional customers into die-hard fans by offering customized access to game statistics at lightning speed SAP HANA. By really understanding the needs of fans, teams and business departments, they have been able to re-invent how hockey statistics are presented. The NHL integrated its team and player ice hockey statistics into the HANA database in order to give its fans powerful tools that enable customization of the NHL.com stats section. HANA provides real-time calculations of the millions of data points and delivers results within seconds. With a focus on contextualization, the SAP design team provided the NHL the visual specifications for a re-launch of its statistics sections on all digital platforms. Since the re-launch, the NHL’s fan engagement has increased significantly as evidenced by +25% visitor traffic and +40% time on site.

Creating a Common Analytical Layer @Intel

Intel has many disparate data sources which require many different BI and visualization tools to comprehensively address. Whether it is Financial Consolidations data from SEM-BCS, Planning and Forecast from BPC, Project management from CPM, BW cubes and DSOs or Business Suite data from ECC, GTS, SRM and SCM there is a need to build a Common Analytical Foundation. Intel uses HANA calculation views to build a virtualized real-time layer across all these systems and provide common access, security and data quality for all the front-end tools in the enterprise.

Operationalizing Analytics in the Royal Canadian Navy: An Unexpected Journey

For over a decade the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) has invested in digitizing and integrating business processes in ERP Systems. In 2013, Vice Admiral Ron Lloyd, then the Deputy Commander of the RCN and since June 2016 the Commander, set the course to operationalize an analytics capability that would benefit every decision maker in the enterprise. Profits would be measured by increased readiness. As a constraint, the RCN would leverage the enterprise tools available and would not make any investments in hardware or software. Instead all expenditures would be focused on change management, content production and user adoption. It was known that technology would not be the problem. What was unexpected was the amount of time and executive engagement that would be needed to drive change. This is the story of the RCN’s experience from both the point of view of the executive champion and the program manager.

An Operating Model for an Analytics Center of Expertise

The Royal Canadian Navy’s analytics journey began in 2013 with system Go-Live occurring in 2015. To support the initiative and drive adoption, Analytics Support Centres were established in four geographic regions to support up to twenty Lines of Business. They are closely synonymous to a Business Intelligence Competency Centre. At the outset, what was missing was a common operating model and set of repeatable processes to build awareness, isolate value cases, prioritize work, apply resources, realize value and drive adoption. This session will cover the evolution of the RCN’s Analytics Support Centre Operating Model and will highlight some of the successes and failures experienced throughout the journey.

Gaining Consumer Buying Behavior Insight with HANA 2.0 & Lumira at Caleres

Caleres’ multiple eCommerce properties, loyalty programs, and retail outlets hindered their ability to understand holistic consumer behavior making effective customer outreach programs less effective, responsive and agile. Join this session and learn how Caleres leveraged HANA 2.0 to combine data from Sales, Inventory, eCommerce, CRM, Loyalty Rewards, and Consumer Demographics to gain significant insights into consumer buying behavior and improve marketing effectiveness and customer experience.

What Next for Business Intelligence? Big data Analytics, Hype and all that Jazz.

How did putting numbers on a screen became sexy? Seems like the work we do as business intelligence professionals has become flavour of the month. The trade and business press is full of glowing case studies of the benefits to be gained from "big data analytics". We are told that being a data scientist is the sexy job for the 21st century. What does this mean for us? Is business intelligence undergoing a major change? What are the drivers of the changes that are happening? This presentation will explore the future of our profession. Drawing on a a content analysis of the current job market, vendor offerings, and innovation theory, it will create a picture of the current and future state of the industry. An examination of the past will reveal innovation cycles that can help understand the “buzz” that currently is associated with our field. Reflecting of the main drivers of cycles - technology, business needs, the vendor market and industry analysts - provides some insight into what might be about to happen. The presentation will conclude with some warnings about how best to ride the “wave” of change that we are currently experiencing, and a warning not to get caught out with expectations and promises that can be hard to meet.

BI COE on a Shoe String

In today’s changing work environments, sometimes you don’t have your resources aligned the way you’d like them.  Find out how one company is trying to do more with less.  We’re using a mix of technology, community outreach and BI evangelization to help engage users and keep them up to date on the BI tools they use every day.

A healthy mix of self-service training, user engagement along with both virtual and on-site events have made an impression on the developer and end user community.  This session will share some of the steps that have been to keep a user base up to date with a small engagement team.  From fully fledged BICC to individual team ‘power user’, this session should hopefully give you some new ideas to take back to your organization.

Technology is a constant change, the business is becoming increasingly BI educated with escalating demands for more data, more tools, and overall more freedom. The business is key in having the BI strategy embraced, and needs to be weaved into its execution.

Impossible Odds: A Story of Strength & Survival

On October 25, 2011, Jessica Buchanan and a colleague were kidnapped at gunpoint by Somali land pirates and held for 93 days, enduring the most harrowing and painful experience of her life. On the day of her kidnapping, she told herself, “some do come out alive, the numbers are small but they do exist.” During her captivity, she was terrorized by her captors, held outdoors in a scrub desert and kept on a starvation diet. Finally, after fruitless negotiations with her captors and her medical state becoming a life-or-death issue, President Barack Obama ordered Navy SEAL Team Six to attempt a rescue. On January 25, 2012, members of SEAL Team Six attacked the heavily-armed captors killing all and airlifting Buchanan and her colleague to safety. In this keynote, Jessica will share the tools she quickly learned to stay alive: how to remain hopeful, trust your instincts and dig deep even when you feel completely empty of any resources. How USPI Delivers Self Service Reporting

This session will highlight and demonstrate how United Surgical Partners International (USPI) built out business intelligence capabilities along with a Data Warehouse from scratch, and delivered reporting, dashboards, and self-service analytics corporate-wide in under six months at a quarter of the expected cost. After 2 years of massive data warehouse growth, USPI was looking to move away from a “Push” reporting model to building out a custom Enterprise Business Intelligence Portal where all end users can go to in order to see the reports and dashboards they need to make their necessary decisions and run their business.  Utilizing Business Objects "Infoview" was the “out of the box” solution, but would require each user to consume a BO License to access their reports and dashboards. What if you could build a home grown enterprise reporting portal that utilized the power of webi reports and xcelsius dashboards, and single sign on leveraging Active Directory, in order to build a robust EBI Portal that houses reports and interactive dashboards?  Come find out how USPI made this vision a reality.

Increasing Adoption & Engagement with Lumira and Design Studio SDK

Since the introduction of Design Studio and Lumira, International Paper has looked for ways of migrating legacy Xcelsius and BEx Web Application Designer content over to these next generation offerings by SAP.

  • Migration, or adaptation, is never a straightforward task, nor do requirements stay the same over time. While Lumira and Design Studio have been clearly stated as the way forward by SAP, we have faced unique requirements that required use of SDK extensions built in-house.

  • Customer adoption is also a key to success. While we can use standard out-of-box tools, many times our users have different ideas of what they want.  SDK Extensions have helped bridge the gap while not going “off road” with a completely custom application.

This session aims to provide:

  • Actual examples of what is possible to create for both self-serve users in Lumira Desktop and for developers in Design Studio.

  • A very high level explanation of skills needed and considerations to think about regarding SDK extensions.

Managing any BI deployment can be challenging, but Healthcare BI brings its own unique obstacles.  As Michigan’s largest healthcare system with 35,000 employees, Beaumont Health certainly knows how a rapidly growing user base and demand for BI brings taxing challenges such as managing system resources, content, users, groups, permissions, schedules.   At the same time, strong reliance on their EHR system means that they must manage all the change and complexity that can come with external application updates.  Add in the extra pressures due to HIPAA, and the merging of hospitals, technology environments and EHR systems, and the workload and complications can be quite daunting.  However, Beaumont has made strong progress in managing these challenges, and this session will give a view into that progress, the tools and methods they have used in the process, their work with SAP partner APOS on targeted need areas, and how they plan to move forward in tackling their BI management challenges ahead.
